Hello there, curious minds! Today, we're diving into the history books to explore an important question: when did Juneteenth become a federal holiday? So, grab a cup of coffee, get comfortable, and let's learn something new together! Guys, explore more in Guides And Explainers and what year did juneteenth become a federal holiday.

What is Juneteenth?

Before we jump into when Juneteenth became a federal holiday, let's quickly understand what Juneteenth is. Juneteenth, a portmanteau of June and nineteenth, commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. It's a time to celebrate freedom, acknowledge the past, and promote equality.

The Emancipation Proclamation

To understand when Juneteenth became a federal holiday, we need to rewind to September 22, 1862. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all enslaved people in Confederate-held territory were to be set free. However, this proclamation couldn't be enforced in places still under Confederate control.

The Arrival of Union Troops in Galveston, Texas

Fast forward to June 19, 1865. Union troops, led by Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas. Texas was the most remote Confederate state, and it was the last place where the news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached. Upon arrival, General Granger issued General Order No. 3, which read:

> "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor."

Celebrating Freedom

News of their newfound freedom spread like wildfire among the formerly enslaved people. They began to celebrate their emancipation, and June 19th became a day of jubilation and liberation. The newly freed people came together to celebrate, often with food, music, and prayer. They also created traditions like reading the Emancipation Proclamation aloud and wearing red, white, and blue - the colors of the Union.

From Local Celebration to Federal Holiday

For over a century, Juneteenth was celebrated primarily in Texas and among former slaves and their descendants. However, it gained national attention in the late 20th century as the nation reckoned with its racial past. In 1980, Texas became the first state to make Juneteenth an official state holiday.

The push to make Juneteenth a federal holiday gained momentum in the following decades. In 2021, after decades of advocacy, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, making Juneteenth the 11th federal holiday in the United States.

Why It Matters

Making Juneteenth a federal holiday is a significant step in acknowledging and honoring the history of slavery and its lasting impact on the United States. It's a time to remember the past, celebrate freedom, and recommit to the ongoing work of promoting equality and justice for all.

So, there you have it, folks! Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, but its roots go back to 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery. It's a day worth celebrating and reflecting on.

Until next time, stay curious, and keep learning!
