A Brief History of the Zodiac Killer

Before we jump into the letters, let's set the stage. The Zodiac Killer terrorized Northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s, claiming at least five victims, but suspected of many more. The killer earned his moniker by sending taunting letters and cryptic ciphers to local newspapers and police departments, along with pieces of bloodied clothing and other gruesome tokens.

The Zodiac Killer's first known murder occurred on July 4, 1968, when he shot and killed a couple, David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen, near Lake Berryessa. The killer struck again on September 27, 1969, shooting and killing Darlene Ferrin and Michael Mageau at a lovers' lane in Vallejo. But it was the letters that would truly set the stage for the killer's infamy.

The Infamous Zodiac Killer Letters

The Zodiac Killer's correspondence began in August 1969, when he sent a letter to the Vallejo Times-Herald claiming responsibility for the murders of Ferrin and Mageau. The letter was accompanied by a cryptic Zodiac Killer cipher, a 409-symbol code that the killer claimed would reveal his identity if decoded. This was just the beginning of a long and disturbing correspondence.

The killer continued to send letters, ciphers, and other macabre items to various newspapers, police departments, and even individuals. The letters were filled with boasts about his crimes, taunts about his cleverness, and threats of future violence. The ciphers, however, remained unsolved, adding to the frustration and intrigue surrounding the case.

The Ciphers: A Code Within a Code

The Zodiac Killer sent at least four ciphers, each one a complex puzzle that has baffled cryptographers, codebreakers, and amateur sleuths for decades. The most famous is the 340 Cipher, sent in 1969 and containing 340 symbols. Despite numerous attempts, no one has ever been able to solve it.

The other ciphers—the 408 Cipher, the 13 Symbol Cipher, and the My Name is... Cipher—have also stubbornly resisted decryption. The killer claimed that the ciphers contained his identity, but if that's true, it's a secret that's remained well-guarded.

The Case of the "My Name is..." Cipher

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Zodiac Killer letters is the so-called "My Name is..." Cipher. Sent in 1974, this cipher is unique because it appears to contain the killer's name. The cipher reads:

MY NAME IS
