According to the Washington Post's Fatal Force Database, between 2015 and 2020, 46 Black women were fatally shot by police. This might not seem like a large number, but consider this: Black women make up only about 13% of the U.S. population. So, when we look at the rate of police killings per capita, the picture becomes much clearer - and much more disturbing.
The Stories Behind the Numbers
Breonna Taylor: A Beautiful Life Cut Short
In March 2020, Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency medical technician, was shot and killed by Louisville Metro Police Department officers who burst into her apartment in the middle of the night. The officers were serving a no-knock warrant, but Taylor's boyfriend, thinking they were intruders, fired a warning shot. In response, the officers opened fire, striking Taylor eight times. None of the officers involved have been charged with her death.
Rayshard Brooks: A Mother's Cry for Justice
In June 2020, Rayshard Brooks, a 27-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by Atlanta police in the parking lot of a Wendy's restaurant. Brooks was asleep in his car, blocking the drive-thru. When police arrived, they found Brooks intoxicated and asked him to take a breathalyzer test. When he failed, he became uncooperative and a struggle ensued. Brooks grabbed an officer's Taser and ran, firing it at the officer as he fled. The officer, Travis Austell, shot Brooks twice in the back, killing him. Brooks' killing sparked protests and calls for Austell's firing, but he remains employed by the Atlanta Police Department.
The Pattern of Police Violence Against Black Women
These stories are just two among many that highlight the systemic issue of police violence against Black women. From Aiyana Stanley-Jones, a 7-year-old girl killed by police during a raid on her home, to Atatiana Jefferson, a 28-year-old woman shot through her own window while playing video games with her nephew, the pattern is clear: Black women are disproportionately affected by police violence.
The Activism: Say Her Name
In response to this crisis, activists have launched campaigns like Say Her Name, a movement to bring awareness to the often overlooked stories of Black women killed by police. The campaign was founded by the African American Policy Forum and the Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies at Columbia Law School, and it has gained significant traction on social media, with people using the hashtag #SayHerName to raise awareness about the issue.
