Who was Edward Gein?

Before we delve into his crimes and Netflix portrayals, let's meet the man behind the infamy. Edward Gein, born on August 27, 1906, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, was an American serial killer and grave robber. Known as the "Butcher of Plainfield," Gein's crimes shocked the nation and inspired numerous horror films, most notably "Psycho" and "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." But who was he, really? That's what we'll explore in this article.

A Troubled Upbringing

Gein's life was marked by tragedy and dysfunction from the start. His father, George, was an abusive alcoholic, and his mother, Augusta, was a devoutly religious woman who instilled in her son a deep fear of the opposite sex. After George's death in 1940, Edward and his mother became increasingly isolated, living together in their decaying farmhouse until her death in 1945.

The Crimes of Edward Gein

In the late 1950s, Gein began his grisly spree of grave-robbing and murder. He targeted local women, bringing their bodies back to his farmhouse where he would dissect them and create grotesque trophies and keepsakes. Here's a chilling breakdown of his known crimes:

Grave Robbing

Gein admitted to robbing at least 40 graves, primarily targeting middle-aged women. He would exhume the bodies and take them back to his farmhouse, where he would desecrate them in horrifying ways.

Murders

Gein is believed to have murdered at least two women: Bernice Worden, a Plainfield hardware store owner, in 1954; and Mary Hogan, the owner of a tavern in nearby Dellwood, in 1953. Both women were shot and killed, and their bodies were found on Gein's property.

The Discovery and Arrest

Gein's crimes came to light in late 1957 when police were searching for Bernice Worden, who had gone missing. They found her body in Gein's barn, hung upside down like a deer carcass. A search of his farmhouse revealed a horrifying scene: furniture made from human bones, a corset made from a human torso, and other gruesome artifacts.

Gein was arrested and ultimately found guilty of murdering Worden and Hogan. He was sentenced to life in prison but died in 1984 at the age of 77.
