Who is the Latest Medal of Honor Winner?
Our latest Medal of Honor winner is Master Sergeant Matthew O. Williams from the U.S. Army. Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Williams joined the Army in 2009 and has since served in various roles, including as an infantryman and a paratrooper. But it was during his deployment to Afghanistan in 2017 that he would go above and beyond the call of duty, earning him the prestigious medal.
The Medal of Honor: A Brief History
Before we delve into Williams' heroic deeds, let's take a quick look at the Medal of Honor itself. Established in 1862, it's the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. The medal is awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguish themselves through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of their own lives, above and beyond the call of duty.
Master Sergeant Matthew O. Williams' Heroic Actions
On April 22, 2017, while serving as a member of the 2nd Platoon, Company B, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Williams and his team were on a mission to clear a Taliban-held village in Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan. As they approached the target, they were ambushed by a large group of enemy fighters, hidden among the civilian population.
Under Fire
Williams and his team came under heavy machine gun and small arms fire from multiple directions. Despite being wounded in the initial attack, Williams didn't falter. He returned fire and provided critical cover for his teammates, allowing them to move to better positions and return fire.
Exfiltrating the Wounded
With the safety of his team in mind, Williams exposed himself to enemy fire to move to a wounded teammate. He provided medical aid and helped him to safety. But his selfless actions didn't stop there. Williams then moved to another wounded teammate, again exposing himself to enemy fire, and helped him to safety as well.
Clearing the Path
With his teammates secured, Williams then turned his attention to the enemy. He maneuvered through the enemy position, engaging and eliminating enemy fighters, all while under fire. His actions allowed his team to break contact and exfiltrate the area.
A Well-Deserved Honor
President Joseph R. Biden Jr. presented Williams with the Medal of Honor at the White House on September 9, 2021. In his remarks, Biden praised Williams' courage and selflessness, saying, "He's a hero. He's a patriot. And he's a great example of what it means to be an American."
Inspiring Future Generations
Williams' actions that day serve as a reminder of the extraordinary bravery and dedication of our service members. His story inspires not just his fellow soldiers, but all of us. It's a testament to the power of courage, selflessness, and determination in the face of adversity.
