A Princess from Mecklenburg-Strelitz

Born on May 18, 1744, in the small German duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was the youngest daughter of Duke Charles Louis Frederick of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and his wife, Princess Elizabeth Albertine of Saxe-Hildburghausen. In 1761, at the age of just 17, Charlotte was betrothed to the then Prince of Wales, George Augustus Frederick, later known as King George III.
