Early Life: From Atlanta to Morehouse

Born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, Martin Luther King Jr. was the middle child of Michael King Sr. and Alberta Williams King. His father was a Baptist minister, and his mother was a schoolteacher. Young Martin Luther, as he was then known, grew up in a middle-class African American neighborhood and attended segregated public schools.

In 1944, at the age of 15, Martin Luther King Jr. entered Morehouse College, an all-male historically black college in Atlanta. He graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. Now, you might be wondering why he was so young when he graduated. Well, Martin Luther King Jr. skipped both the 9th and 12th grades!

The Call to Ministry and Higher Education

After graduation, King entered Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1951. It was here that he began to develop his ideas about nonviolent protest and civil disobedience, influenced by the likes of Mahatma Gandhi.

In 1954, Martin Luther King Jr. became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. The following year, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, where he received his Ph.D. in systematic theology in 1955.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott

While serving as pastor in Montgomery, King was catapulted into the civil rights movement. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, an African American seamstress, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a city bus. The incident sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, led by King, which lasted 381 days and resulted in the desegregation of the city's bus system.

The "I Have a Dream" Speech and Beyond

Martin Luther King Jr. became the face of the civil rights movement, advocating for nonviolent protest and civil disobedience. In 1963, he delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, calling for an end to racism and an end to segregation.

Over the next few years, King continued his activism, leading protests and advocating for social change. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, becoming the youngest person to receive the award at the time.

Assassination and Legacy

On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, while supporting striking sanitation workers. His death was a shockwave that reverberated across the nation and the world, but his legacy lived on.
