Arizona's Favorite Son: John McCain's Early Life

Born on August 29, 1936, in the Canal Zone of Panama, John Sidney McCain III was the son and grandson of four-star admirals in the United States Navy. Young John, known as Johnny, grew up in a family steeped in military tradition and honor. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1958, he embarked on a career that would see him become one of the most decorated veterans of the Vietnam War.

The Vietnam Years: Courage Under Fire

In 1967, Lieutenant Commander John S. McCain Jr. was flying his A-4 Skyhawk on a bombing mission over Hanoi when he was shot down. He was severely injured, with both arms and one leg broken, and was subsequently taken as a prisoner of war. For over five and a half years, McCain endured torture and hardship in the infamous Hanoi Hilton, but his unyielding spirit and courage never wavered. His refusal to be released before other POWs, despite his injuries, earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow servicemen and the American public.

From Navy Hero to Statesman

After his release in 1973, McCain retired from the Navy and began his political career. In 1982, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and six years later, he won a seat in the U.S. Senate. Over the next three decades, McCain served as a powerful voice in the Senate, championing issues like campaign finance reform, national security, and immigration.

A Presidential Bid and a Legacy of Bipartisanship

In 2008, McCain ran for President of the United States, ultimately losing to Barack Obama. However, his presidential bid was marked by a moment of bipartisanship that would come to define his legacy. At the 2008 Republican National Convention, he delivered a powerful speech endorsing Obama, famously saying, "We need unity, not partisanship." This moment, along with his work on issues like immigration reform and the normalization of relations with Vietnam, underscored McCain's commitment to reaching across the aisle and putting the needs of the country above party politics.

Farewell to a Maverick

In 2017, McCain was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. He passed away on August 25, 2018, just three days shy of his 82nd birthday. In his final months, he continued to advocate for bipartisanship and the values he held dear, leaving behind a legacy of service, courage, and independence that will forever inspire Americans.
