Early this morning, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) received reports of a suspicious vehicle speeding through downtown Portland. The vehicle, a black SUV, was reported to be driving erratically and ignoring traffic signals. When officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver took off, leading to a high-speed police chase through the heart of Portland.
The Chase is On!
The chase began around 9:30 AM near Burnside Bridge, with the SUV weaving in and out of traffic at high speeds. PPB officers, along with Oregon State Police (OSP) and Multnomah County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), were in hot pursuit, using tactical maneuvers to keep up with the fleeing vehicle.
A Wild Ride Through Portland
The chase took us on a thrilling tour of Portland, with the SUV and pursuing officers speeding through Old Town/Chinatown, Goose Hollow, and even Lloyd District. At one point, the chase reached speeds of over 100 mph on I-84, with officers using PIT maneuvers (Precision Immobilization Technique) to try and stop the vehicle safely.
The Big Finish
After a heart-pounding 20-minute chase, the SUV finally came to a stop near Gateway, with the driver surrendering to police. Officers quickly took the suspect into custody without further incident. The suspect, a 27-year-old Portland resident, was later identified as James "Jimmy" O'Connell, who was wanted for multiple outstanding warrants.
